Slam Dunk vs Layup

I got a basketball hoop when I was around 13. The height on it was adjustable and I would take it down to its lowest height — seven and a half feet — and do my best Jordan impersonation dunking on…

Best Lines From Some Great Books

I mark the lines that changed my life, so you don’t have to read whole books. I found it valuable as a parent too.

I read a lot. I weed through prose. Somewhere in between, I discover a line that is profoundly deep and yet simple.

I have shared them here with good reasons.

Scott Adams has likely failed at more things than anyone you’ve ever met, including his corporate career, his inventions, his investments, and two restaurants. He then created Dilbert. His best line from the book, How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big :

“Success causes passion more than passion causes success.”

Ho, so much truth to that in real life.

“No matter who you are, you need two kinds of friends in your life. The first kind is one you can call when something good happens, and you need someone who will be excited for you. Not a fake excitement veiling envy, but a real excitement. You need someone who will actually be more excited for you than he would be if it had happened to him. The second kind of friend is somebody you can call when things go horribly wrong — when your life is on the line and you only have one phone call. Who is it going to be?”

Classification is one thing, this is the simplest way I have ever seen that resonates with me. Thanks to Ben Horowitz, author of The Hard Thing About Hard Things.

I agree with the author, it’s hard find both in the same person!

In the Willpower Instinct, Kelly McGonigal, shares the best why question

“Best way to improve self control is to know how and why you lose control.”

My mom is usually muted in her reactions when I share something interesting. When I shared her the second line in this quote— her eyes lit up.
