Figuring Out Your Life At 23 Is Not Mandatory

Dear young generations, it’s okay — if you’re twenty barely making a living. Trying to perfect an egg omelet on weekends while sweating, forcing yourself to get up in the morning, and striving to make a career. It’s all right. You’re on the right track and don’t be baffled when someone says they know someone your age who graduated as early as 19 or 20, landed on a prestigious job at a reputable company, got promotions years later. Acquiring property and traveling to countries you’ve never heard of. Ladies and gentlemen, these are the social standards of success. They say it like walking a well-defined, straight path with one destination. Success. While you are on a long winding, rocky mountain with many crossroads ahead. You barely do it every day. You effortlessly called it a failure and you called yourself a loser. You may not know where your career is going — and life in general, but at least don’t be lured into the misconception that you are carving your life too slowly.

Figuring out your life at 23 is not mandatory. Who says it is? Is it written into law? Is there any document stating that you should have a grip on your life over a certain period? And if you can’t, will that make you less of a person? No. So, stop paying attention to people who are doing nothing but exposing their subjective connotations of success. Stop paying attention to people trying to dictate what you should do or where you should be at this point in your life. Stop paying attention to people who don’t believe in you, but only believe in their ideas. Stop paying attention to people who drag you down with them. Stop paying attention to people who don’t intend to help but would rather destroy you. Stop paying attention to the wrong people. Save it for something worthy.

Instead, you need to get to know yourself better and have time to discover. Uncover your hidden strength. Do what will motivate you to wake up every day. Learn new things and be curious. Because sometimes we get distracted by what’s going on around us and forget to focus on ourselves. Our attention is diverted to less important matters and we have dropped ourselves to rock bottom by believing that we missed the imaginary deadlines. The truth is, there are no deadlines. Everyone is made differently, in every possible uniqueness. Everyone has their own stories to tell. Your timeline is different from that of your friends, cousins, and colleagues. Your success is different from their success. Focus on things that allow you to get to know yourself better than your so-called failed attempts on reaching success. Because if you set your success on these social standards, you torture yourself. While the others are doing well, don’t let yourself think that you are being left behind.

You are not competing on a racetrack to see who will take the finish flag first. You are not on a track with someone else to participate in a competition. You have your own set of tracks, design with your goals, with your passion and your dreams.
