Goodbye Republican Party

The Brand is Dead

The pending defeat of Trump, accompanied by the blue wave of Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, evidences the Republican party’s death. While parties have suffered severe losses in the past, this time it’s real. The party doesn’t stand for anything good anymore. There is nothing left to rebuild. Those nostalgic for the old GOP will find the current one is different. It is rotten, racist, short-sighted, and shrinking.

Last summer’s remarkable Black Lives Matters protests prove that civil rights are not just for African Americans and other minorities. Large contingents of whites, people previously mostly absent from such movements, joined in, with passion. A national consensus that racism is systemic and destructive to our future emerged. The protestors didn’t just want police reform; they demanded social and economic justice.

Protesters were not petitioning their government. Often, they were protesting it. Many saw no point in appealing to a government headed by Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell.

With Trump at the helm, the GOP has become associated with the old order. Trump wanted federal troops to protect confederate monuments, called protestors thugs and informed African Americans that he had done more for Blacks than any other President, possibly including Lincoln. Trump’s party became synonymous with everything the protesters opposed.

Younger voters, especially those with college educations, ran away. With each additional insane tweet or lie, Trump’s support, never a majority, eroded.

Trump evolved into a laughable caricature of himself. He was parodied on SNL, ridiculed on news media (not just MSNBC), and dismissed by other foreign leaders. As this happened, Trump played golf, fashioned a pandemic response without reading reports or listening to his team of scientists, and lied. More than 230,000 died.

Trump supplemented these failures by abdicating leadership on climate change. As a climate change denier, he quickly quit the Paris Climate Agreement and took executive actions to reverse his predecessor’s environmental initiatives.
