My Body

A poem about the body’s response to threats

My body goes into battle
for the impending threat

muscles tighten
breathing shallow
stomach dropping
down to the ground

Ready to fight
or ready to flee

There’s no time
for digestion

Acid boils in soup of bile
my gut is flipping upside down

Real or not
the threat seems real
it takes the breath
out of me

Threat leaving
but my body
still seized
by the remaining shadow

I gotta put
the breath back in me
and calm this body
back to the ground.
