Why Do We Need Even More Predictability as We Get Older?

The same restaurant, the same outfits, and the same arf

The third and last season of the Krominsky Method is out on Netflix and I am chuffed. Such a good show, witty, honest, real, sophisticated.

Why are people so obsessed with predictability? Why we should be conscious so that we are not controlled by the unbearable obsession of familiarity, the one thing that hinders innovation.

I grew up going to the same dim-sum restaurant in Hong Kong every Sunday with my family. It became pretty devastating when it was shut down from regentrification in the area. I was around 15 years old.

A family meeting was called, as no one knew what to do anymore. After a few unsuccessful attempts, the social fabric of our family broke down.

Yes, this dramatic.

That dim-sum restaurant bonded us together. My cousins and I took the opportunity to start going out with our friends instead, and my dad and uncle never returned home until much later from their Sunday tennis.

The habit was broken, and people maneuvered to new habits.

Eventually, my grandma found a new dim-sum joint, but she only goes with her walking friends. Like the English Sunday roast, the habit of having Hong Kong Sunday dim-sum lunch has not vanished, but the composition changes.

It makes us feel safe. It regularises less important things so we can focus on the important stuff. It fills our time without too much effort. It bonds social groups. No nasty surprises. It is tested. We all know what we want. Everyone is happy. Auto-pilot is allowed.

My dad ordered the same spare-rib rice in the restaurant every Sunday.
