Johnston Press unveils senior digital appointments

Johnston Press has announced several new members of its senior digital team as part of the company’s ambitious audience growth plans.

Heads of Audience for the North of England, South of England and Scotland & Northern Ireland have all been confirmed, while the company has also created a new Head of Content Development role to support product, learning and content planning needs.

Mark Thompson, speaking at the Behind Local News conference in May

Mark Thompson has been appointed Head of Audience for the North of England.

Martin Little, JP’s director of digital content, said: “In the past two years, as Head of Audience for Yorkshire, Mark has transformed the performance of both the Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post — with each ranking as some of the fastest growing sites in the UK.”

Mark will manage the northern central team and provide direct support, instruction and guidance to the digital teams in Yorkshire, the North-East and North-West.

Paul Fisher has been appointed Head of Audience for the South of England.

He has been online editor for Peterborough for several years and built it into one of the most successful sites in the business, said Martin.

Martin added: “Paul’s name is well known across Johnston Press as the communications lead for digital figures and the daily online editors call.

“Paul will be the main liaison in the south with the Leeds and Edinburgh central teams and provide direct support, instruction and guidance to the digital teams in Portsmouth, Sussex, Home Counties and Midlands.”

Steven Chisholm

Steven Chisholm has been appointed Head of Audience for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Martin added: “Steven has been pivotal in delivering and establishing our central print and digital teams across the business.

“Steven will manage the Edinburgh central team and provide direct support, instruction and guidance to the digital teams in Scotland and Northern Ireland.”

Nick Mitchell

Nick Mitchell has been appointed Head of Content Development for Johnston Press.

Nick has managed the central digital team in Edinburgh for several years.

Martin added: “Before that he was Deputy Digital Editor of The Scotsman, helped launch WOW247, and was a key player in the launch of iNews two years ago.

“Nick will manage the central video and digital production teams and work across the group in delivery of the content plans, training and emerging products.

“There was an exceptional level of competition for the roles from both internal and external candidates and it is a testament to the continuing success of our digital operations that each new role was filled by internal candidates.”
