5 Surprising Synchronized Figure Skating Experiences

I began synchronized skating for the Chicago Jazz when I was eight years old and competed with them for seven seasons. This does not represent or reflect every synchronized skating organization’s policies and every synchronized skater’s experiences. In fact, many of my friends on different organizations found certain restrictions a bit odd. However, this is a list of a few things you likely didn’t know about being a synchronized figure skater.

Despite some of these factors, synchronized skating for the Jazz was a positive experience that shaped me into a better person. For a long time, I had considered Chicago Jazz my life. My teammates became my best friends, and I got to share unbelievable experiences and accomplishments with them.

“With other aspects of skating, you could be competing against all of your friends,” Malito said. “I skated with [Gracie Gold and Carly Gold], and I can’t imagine how it must have felt to compete against your sister … You got to meet a bunch of people, you had a group of people who understood what you were going through, and you learned a bunch of life lessons.”
