summarising my experience

In our modern-day society, web-based activities are becoming more and more ingrained in our society. Our daily lives have been adapted to incorporate all aspects of the online world in our activities, with majority of industrial fields have major or essential technological components. Despite this, technology is a relatively new concept. We as a society have quickly adapted to rely on this technology and exploit its facets for commercial and personal gain.

I began this unit as part of my bachelor of cyber security and behaviour degree with low expectations and a general negative outlook towards this subject, this was based in a previous association with a subject I did in high school that I found boring and relatively pointless, I felt that the core teachings of the subject would be irrelevant to modern day life. Before completing this unit, I approach the ‘web’ very differently I used it as a form of information, communication or for entertainment as a specific function, it was only once completing my first week in this course that I realised the web creates a medium through which individuals can pursue online profession and hobbies and creates an infinite space for individuals ideas and creations that maybe could not exist in a physical form, such as models of objects too big for an individual to create in person that they can design online. Another example of this is a blog, a core facet of this unit, in which we expressed our thoughts and ideas on the weekly topic and shared it with the population of the website ‘medium’. Blogs are a new idea in society as they were enabled by the development of technology in society, these blogging websites create a place where people can share their blogs with people who want to read blogs and discover new authors. These. Blogs were the first of three assignments we were given throughout this unit, with two blog posts (500 words) being due through the semester. These assignments gave me a first-hand experience of the process of writing a blog and using blogging platforms such as medium.

Through these blogs we discussed many topics including, privacy, surveillance, freedom of speech and more. This unit not only taught me about the capacities of the online ‘web’ but opened my experience of the web to that of online discussions and debates on world issues. This unit revealed to me the depth to which the internet supports the idea of freedom of speech as it allows anyone to voice their opinion on any matter through a numerous number of platforms.

As a formal assessment for this unit we as students were asked to leave several comments on other students posts as a form of feedback for their blog posts. This was a strange interaction for me at first as I felt awkward criticising someone’s work that I didn’t know, eventually I realised that this was a barrier I would have to overcome later in life and might as well do now. These comments provided me with the perfect opportunity to do so. This experience taught me the skill of providing positive criticism that can be used to build off and develop their work. This experience also helped me develop a very important skill that I didn’t realise I was lacking until my studies through this unit. I realised I was not very good at accepting criticism of my own work. I believe this unit gave me the opportunity to develop and mature this skill as I used the criticism to correct and improve my own work.

I believe this unit to have been very useful in teaching me skills that will become core components of my skill base that may allow me to find a job, the key one being interacting with people online without physical interaction. This unit created my first experience of this through a group project in which myself along with three other members of this unit created an online campaign. As a group we only meet once with the majority of our interaction being through an app called Facebook messenger, a sub-app of the Facebook application commonly used by the mainstream public. This interaction taught me the importance of honest communication with group work and requirement of clear and concise speech when contacting someone online.

In my studies to complete this unit I was exposed to a different side of the internet. This side while relevant to my studies I found was less relevant to societies interaction with the online world. The use of blogs, while interesting and informative, I found was not very relevant to any previous experience I have had with the online world. I believe this unit could use a more relevant medium of communication.

In conclusion i believe this unit is a fantastic way for individuals to learn about the different aspects of our society through the web and to learn how to interact in a professional and effective method with others online.
