Declutter Diwali

As the delivery boy handed over the package, I received an instant gratification of being upgraded my style quotient. But alas, contrary to my expectations, nobody cared a dime when it was worn and…

A YEAR OF RECONNAISSANCE

The year 2017 was a huge one for me. It was all about successes, failures, breakthroughs, greatness, progress, moving forward, joy, networking, promotion and, above all, exploit.

This is just a summary of what happened this year. It was full of good and bad times. I appreciate God through it all. I lost and I gained. I learnt, unlearnt and relearnt.

Who am I if I can’t say “Thank You” to the One that kept me to this moment? I will definitely be an ingrate. I noticed that so many waters passed under the bridge but through it all, it was just God. I firstly want to give my gratitude to Almighty God for His — never failing presence, undeserved love, incomparable kindness and, topping it all, His love that never fails.

I know I’ve broken Your heart a lot of times this year but God, You still forgave me, and for this I say “THANK YOU LORD!”

The year started like it was not going to be as nice as it eventually turned out to be. I had so many plans but not all was obtained as I write but I will say quite a good number was.

Review of the Year in Months...

JANUARY

I can remember I was still working at Tin Can Island as an IT support. The job was just the same routine and nothing special except the courses I was taking online that made it special. A friend suggested we organize Django Girls in the East; that was what made the year very special because I wanted to do something big. I never taught of or remembered LAUTECH. Who cares? I started my research on how to make the event successful; I planned the event for May and started preparing for it. I also remember I attended two conferences.

First, Bankole Mentorship Section: It was really awesome hearing and learning from @steveharris @iambankole @stephobi . Something I picked from them all is, “No one owes you anything, you owe yourself everything.”

And second, Lofty Height Conference: It was a great shut for the year then as it was a new year. Thanks to @waletejumade, @feladurotoye and many others. I remember this from the conference: “Light has no value in light but value in darkness” and many others.

FEBRUARY

Another great month was it again . It was indeed great. I attended the first big Django Girls in the East organised by Adaora and Ifeanyi. As a matter of fact, I travelled to the East for the very first time. It was a long and stressful journey as you can imagine. I was a coach there for the event at Awka. It was indeed awesome as I met great people at the event. I also remember I attended a leadership training this same month (Common Purpose). The event was awesome, and I enjoyed every moment spent with the seasoned leaders. To wrap up February, I coached the SDPs at Django Girls Lagos 3 organized by Simisola. Little did I know the year was just starting but I never forgot it was God all the way.

MARCH

The school has been on strike but decided to call us for exam after a year break (that’s what Nigeria is like with our “good” leaders). It was also my month of celebrating an additional year on Earth (14th).

APRIL

Was still writing exam but I remembered attending Womentech Makers Programme in Lagos. I must tell you when those women shared their stories I was inspired and touched. The road is actually not smooth for anyone. So don’t think you will inspire anyone by saying it was so easy and soft for you all your life.

I applied for ALC 1.0 a very long time but can’t remember when exactly, but the track started this April and I was selected to be one of the participants out numerous applicants in Nigeria. That’s how I started learning Mobile App Development, and by the way, online.

I also coached at Django Girls Ilorin.

MAY

It was a month for my big and planned event in the East. I was excited because I was going to be touching lives . The event in Onitsha as you already guessed was lit 👆. Lives were touched and inspired. Thanks to Kehinde Funso for making it a reality.

I also attended Techpoint Inspired. The first thing that made the event lit was that they started as planned – no African time. The team that put it together were just too good. Thanks to @adewaleyusuf and others. It was awesome there.

JUNE

We are getting to the middle of the year but I was not tired of keeping on, so I kept keeping on. We were already rounding off ALC1.0 this month. I already finished my lesson as beginner and we had the wrap-up party. I had my first Mobile App running but the process was quiet challenging; however, I sailed through.

Hello! I remember attending Social Change Summit which was the second I will be attending in my life and I attended it because the one held in 2016 was powerful and I needed to see the second version of it which was also awesome.

I almost forgot I also participated in my first hackathon event this year. I must tell you, I enjoyed it, even if I didn’t win, it was an eye opener and I met awesome girls. Thanks to Grit System

JULY

The first half had just been completed; what exactly would be happening this second half? And leaving my working place, too. I got to face life squarely.

Rubies Technologies has been on my mind earlier this year because I wanted to start something that will specifically train kids and teenagers to become developers, though I had this soft spot for girls which has made me a big fan of Django Girls. I started the initiative with two schools in Akure where I trained the kids from scratch with the help of the corps members (ICT unit). It was awesome working with them all. I will specially thank Onihale Oluwatosin for making this dream come true. We are raising the next generation of developers together.

In July, I also volunteered for the edge series which was my first volunteer experience outside tech. I volunteered because having attend the series a year before, it changed my life; so volunteering this year was my way of giving back and I really am happy I did that. Thanks to Omowumi, my unit head; she made my volunteer experience awesome. And to the organizers of the event (Swift Link), you are doing awesome work. Kudos!!

I also remember assisting Ishola Adebayo on the Digital Marketing Training at Akure. It was an awesome experience. We trained the corpers there to leverage on the digital skills.

AUGUST

You can guess what August Was like already. We took Rubies Technologies to another level. Since it was summer period, we trained about 30 teens in Elcrystal Private School on how to build a website. They learnt HTML and CSS very well, as well as Introduction to Javascript . It was great seeing this set of students coming up with different websites at the end of the training. Thanks to Akinwande Wunmi who assisted in the training. A big thank you to Opetunde Adepoju and OLuwatobiloba Adelusi for their support and also for coming around to wrap up the training. It was powerful. We got good feedbacks from students and teachers of the school. As you’re already thinking you missed that part.

I was opportune to train at Django Girls Aba organized by Amarachi. Now you will say I am “Ajala”. No worries. Thanks to Almighty for all the journey mercies.

I also spoke at Elijah’s closing event. Thanks so much Abata.

SEPTEMBER

Yes!! It was not the best of it. Finally, I got Google Digital Skill certificate. God knows when I started taking the course online. Yes, I could recall that my Laptop “packed up” this month. Yeah, where do I start from? I lost all my data – everything. Life just had to continue at this point and – good news – I got accepted into the Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI), an initiative instituted by the erstwhile US President, Barrack Obama. I was to, together with other participants from across West Africa, resume camp on the 23rd and, it was going to last five week. I also had another Django Girls event I was already planning in Lautech for November.

OCTOBER

I was at the YALI Regional Leadership Centre all through this month. Click here to see my experience.

NOVEMBER

It was quiet busy preparing for my event in less than 7 days of returning from the leadership centre, but, as you already guessed, the event was awesome.

I also coached and volunteered at Africa Code Week by Codespark. You know those fantastic kids specifically made it awesome.

Thanks to all the supporters club for Django Girls Lautech. Female programmers are receiving fire in Lautech; watch out for more of us in 2018.

Thanks to Nat for assisting in training those kids in Oyo State. They were really enlightened.

DECEMBER

Hour of Code (Abraham, thanks for the invite). And the year finally wraps up today.
I forgot to tell you that, finally Rubies Technologies got registered; so 2018 is gonna be 🔥.

This year I learnt how to swim, though not perfect yet. I also worked on my public speaking skills.

For those I have done wrong to or something not too good for this year, I am using this medium to say I really am so very sorry. It never was my intention. I hope to be a better person in 2018. Can’t wait to see you next year. Thanks for being a part of my absolutely eventful and wonderful 2017. Greater years ahead.

Congratulations and Happy new year to you!!!!
