I get home after work. Scrolling my phone but not doing or looking at anything in particular. Lost in thought. There’s a bottle of wine on the table. I’m aware of the hunger in my stomach. But I…

5 Tips for Unleashing Your Voice as a Writer

You have more control over your voice than you think.

I used to get frustrated when my writing lacked the “spark” that other writing had. I labored over each word I wrote, trying to make things perfect.

I had this idea that my voice would be apparent right away. I thought it would just come naturally.

What I didn’t realize is that style takes work. It isn’t something you have or don’t have.

Anybody can develop their style if they practice these five things.

Quantity trumps quality.

To hone your skills, you need to put in the time.

Write as often as you can — every day is best.

Discard the idea of writer’s block. There are ways to combat it.

To strengthen your writing muscle, try free association writing. This involves writing whatever comes to mind, nonstop, for 10 to 15 minutes.

If you’re ever at a loss about what to write, this practice will help you generate ideas. You’ll have a lot of nonsense to dig through, but you’ll often find some gems in there too.

By making writing a habit, rather than simply writing when you have inspiration, you’ll improve much quicker.

Writing regularly also makes it easier to write. Think of it as a muscle you need to build.

If you work out your writing muscle regularly, then when you have an idea, you’ll have the skills to express it.

Look at the writers whose work grabs your attention. Dissect their work. What do they do? Try out their techniques in your own writing.

You’ll figure out what works and doesn’t work.

Everything is about context. Writing poetry is a much different skill than writing articles.

Poetic techniques can still add flavor to your articles, though. It can make them stand out.

Draw inspiration from all types of writing. They all have something to teach you.
